Dear Friends,

Ellie Kinnaird Greetings from Raleigh.

As we continue our work during the short legislative session, I wanted to highlight several initiatives we will consider:

Several measures to make the state sales taxes fairer to small businesses and consumers, for instance, a loaf of bread at a supermarket is taxed at a higher rate than the same loaf of bread purchased at a bakery. In 2004 I introduced legislation to keep small bakeries from being penalized. But we were unable to work out a solution with the department of Revenue. This year, we have crafted a bill to provide relief to these small bakeries. There are also similar inequities for interior designers and industrial equipment. Legislation being considered now is working to fix that. In light of the economy and its impact on consumers, we are working to make sure that our sales taxes are fair.

In the very near future, we will receive the state budget from the House. I have heard from many of you about your priorities and will keep them in mind. I am committed to continuing to invest in education and ensure that our students are receiving a sound education and are being encouraged to stay in school. I will keep you updated on the budget process as it moves forward.

As always, please feel free to contact me to share your opinions about these initiatives or any other issue you feel is important, and thank you for the opportunity to serve you in the Senate. I hope you have a nice weekend.
