Dear Friends,

Ellie Kinnaird Greetings from Raleigh.

This week, the Senate joined the House in inviting Governor Perdue to deliver her State of the State address on March 9. We look forward to hearing from the Governor about her priorities and look forward to working with her to improve our economy and create jobs.

We passed several initiatives this week that will impact our economy. First, in our efforts to recognize the importance of the motorsports industry to our state’s economy, we passed a measure that will make it easier for drivers to travel on North Carolina highways. The bill allows for car trailers behind motor homes, which is prohibited under current law. I supported the legislation because it limits the total length and lets the Department of Transportation have the final say on safety.

We also directed state universities and agencies to develop ways in which our state can better prepare for the Baby Boomers as they retire and become a more aging population. We are working hard on our current economic crisis, but we must also plan for the future as well.

Despite the busy week in committee meetings and session, we were pleased to welcome several special guests to the Senate, including North Carolina’s own, world-renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis and the amazing singing and drumming family band “The Healing Force.”

As always, please feel free to contact me to share your opinions on any issue you feel is important, and thank you for the opportunity to serve you in the Senate. I hope you have a nice weekend.
