As a mother, grandmother, a teacher and attorney, Ellie knows the demands on working families. She takes that life experience with her every day in the State Senate to fight for the issues that make a difference in the lives of the people in her district and in the State. Now in her 8th term in the North Carolina Senate, Ellie currently represents the people of Orange and Person Counties. Although there is uncertainty about the final legislative district maps for the 2012 election, it is highly likely that the Senate's 23rd District will be Chatham and Orange Counties. Ellie provides principled leadership on the issues that matter to the people of our district and the people of North Carolina. She continues to fight for open and honest government, for a quality education for all, for a robust economy with good jobs in the industries of the future, for a healthy environment, for equal opportunity and equal protection under the law and as an advocate for those with little hope. Recently she was recognized by Partners Against Trafficking Humans and also by Peace Action. In 2009 she was awarded Senator of the Year, one of the Green Tie Awards. This award, given by the Conservation Council of North Carolina, honors an elected official who is a leading advocate and policymaker in the area of environmental protection and natural resources. Senator Kinnaird was praised for her work on legislation calling for the implementation of a low-emission vehicle program and a moratorium on coal-fired power plants.
